Authorities look into the electrocution death of a teenager in Ogun.

The death of a 15-year-old girl (name withheld) who was allegedly electrocuted in the state capital of Abeokuta’s Olomore Housing Estate is under investigation by the Ogun State Police Command.

She was trying to retrieve water from an estate well at approximately 11:50 p.m. on Sunday, according to a previous report from Punch Metro.

When the compound’s electricity supply went out, the teenage girl reportedly went outside to get water. But as they were drawing water from the well, the electricity unexpectedly came back on.

Unbeknownst to her, there was a naked cable placed inside the well where she was fetching water from. The teenager had contact with the said cable and was jolted immediately after the power supply was restored.

When contacted on Monday for confirmation, Omolola Odutola, the state police public relations officer, stated that a hospital’s on-duty physician had confirmed the girl’s death and that an investigation had been launched to determine what negligence caused the occurrence.

“One Onyekachi Silas “M” at Olomore Housing Estate reported a case of electrocution to the Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa,” Odutola wrote in a WhatsApp message to our correspondent.

“Onyekachi narrated to the DPO that his younger brother, through a phone he received on that 31/3/24 at about 23:50, that one (name withheld) “F” 15 years, who is also the brother’s wife’s younger sister, is living with them.

“He further stated that there was a power outage in the house, and she went to the well to fetch water. In the process of fetching water, power was restored. She was tragically electrocuted by a naked cable of the pumping machine placed inside the well.

“She was rushed to the hospital, where the doctor on duty confirmed her death. The investigation has commenced, and the corpse has been deposited at the Oke Lantoro morgue.”
