Cardi B Samples Missy Eliot’s “She’s A Bitch” In New Track

For her “Like What” freestyle and offset-directed video, Cardi B samples Missy Elliott.

Cardi B has returned.

The Grammy-winning rapper surprised fans with her ostentatious “Like What” freestyle, her first official song release of 2024, after teasers for days. Cardi started promoting the song earlier this week on social media, where she shared a teaser and the official cover art.

A music video directed by Offset for the song “Like What” is also available, seen above.

In the song, which features a sample of Missy Elliott’s 1999 hit song “She’s a Bitch,” Cardi reaffirms her place in the industry and warns those who would criticize her: In the teaser, she rapped, “I ain’t even got dressed/Any L that I took, come after YS.” “Ayo, let me give this motherfuckin’ year a little more fire, bitch. I haven’t really talked my stuff in a minute. Who the fuck do these bitches think they are talking to?Like, really, are you that stupid?

Only a few weeks have passed since Cardi’s spouse hinted at new songs. He shared a mute Instagram Story of himself bobbing his head inside the studio.

“Stop being scary and drop the album,” Offset captioned the post, which tagged Cardi. “Shit goes crazy.”

Cardi has not revealed if “Like What” is a standalone release or part of a full-length project, perhaps the long-awaited follow-up to her 2018 debut LP, Invasion of Privacy. The music video does promise at the end, “This is just the beginning. Stay tuned.”

The MC spoke about her sophomore album during a September interview with Ebro Darden, saying she planned to drop the record “very soon.”

“You know what? I was indecisive but I was like, you know what? I should already start talking about the album because I’m going to be putting it out very soon,” she said. “But it’s like I have to watch it because I always feel like somebody watching me—it’s going to come out when it’s going to come out…I can say that it’s not going to come out this year. … For this album, I’m just holding it because I feel like I’m missing a couple of things. Then on top of that, everything just has to be like perfect from everything because I feel like people are expecting so much.”

Not only Cardi, but other artists have drawn inspiration from Missy Elliott’s “She’s A Bitch.” In addition to sampling the same Missy Elliott song, BIA released her single “I’m That Bitch” last year.

In 2021, Elliott discussed the significance of the song and its accompanying music video, bragging that filmmaker Hype Williams, producer Timbaland, and she were “decades ahead” of the game.

Cardi’s “Like What” freestyle is available to stream on Apple Music.
