As she publishes her debut album, Simone Ledward Boseman is drawing inspiration from her connection with her late husband, Chadwick Boseman.

In a recent interview with Vibe, Simone Ledward Boseman, better known as sahn, talked candidly about her experience writing her album The Mornings after her spouse passed away in August 2020 at the age of 43.

The R&B singer clarified that a big part of the inspiration for her new album came from the love and bond she had with the late actor. “I always see messages from Chad. The singer told the outlet that although sometimes they are lot more subdued, it’s all about figuring out how to accept this new relationship you have with this person, one that is now solely spiritual, and how to communicate with them and [vice versa].

Simone Ledward Boseman speaks on how she gets through

“I felt called to really lay it all bare [because] otherwise, if I’m not going to be open, vulnerable, and honest, then what is the point of writing this album?” she added. “It’s still a little bit scary, but I do feel very sure that showing that vulnerability was and is the right thing.”

The singer also shared that she continues to look to the legacy of her husband, Chadwick Boseman as she sets out to create her own through her songwriting. She said, “Taking everything that I learned and how I was influenced by his legacy is how I’m able to move forward and to continue to carry his spirit with me in my own work.”

“I know that being his wife is a badge that I wear with honor, something that I wear with pride,” the “angelsxdemons” singer said. “It is always that honor to represent him in any space.”

“He changed my life. Knowing him and loving him changed my life,” the recording artist continued. “Losing him changed my life. I think that ‘sahn’ is how I move forward, how I forge a path that is my own.”

On October 20, Ledward Boseman independently released The Mornings. The seductive, alt-R&B song “angelsxdemons” and its accompanying music video were her lead single, which she released last month. She also released the music video for the album’s lead single on the day of its release.

Simone Ledward Boseman will release a song on November 1

The artist, who told Vibe she felt the Get On Up actor would have enjoyed to hear the instrumental song “chad’s prayer,” which features trumpeter Dontae Winslow, will release the music video on November 1.

When the singer-songwriter announced the project on Instagram, she shared the album artwork and opened up in the caption about what it means to her. “baby’s first album a letter to my beloved to my past, present and future self a story of strength,” she wrote.

After a protracted fight with colon cancer, Ledward Boseman’s spouse—the celebrity most known for playing King T’Challa in the 2018 film Black Panther—passed away in August 2020 at home in the company of his loved ones.

His wife had paid tribute to him at the 2021 Stand Up to Cancer televised event by performing Billie Holiday’s “I’ll Be Seeing You,” one year after he passed away.

In a November 2022 interview with Whoopi Goldberg that aired on Good Morning America, she also spoke about her grief and what she called the “most challenging two years” of her life.

“Some days, I’m doing worse than I’m really willing to acknowledge. Other days, I’m doing better than I feel comfortable admitting,” the singer said at the time.

“I can’t believe that I was so lucky,” she tearfully shared. “I can’t believe that I got to love this person, and I also got them to love me too.”
